Vitamin D during pregnancy supports child’s bone health

Taking vitamin D during pregnancy is good for the child’s bone health

A British study has shown that taking a daily vitamin D supplement during pregnancy really makes a difference for the child’s skeleton.

There are many reasons why you should make sure to get enough vitamin D, especially if you are pregnant. This was demonstrated in a British study of bone strength in children aged four to seven years. As part of the study, a large group of pregnant women got 25 micrograms of vitamin D daily or matching placebo from 14-17 weeks of gestation until delivery. Afterwards, the researchers conducted several tests of the children’s bone health and compared the outcome in both groups.

Good for bone density and mineral content

The study, which is published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, confirms what is already known, which is that vitamin D contributes to normal growth of bone tissue in children. The scientists measured bone mineral density and mineral content in the bones of 454 children and detected a significant and positive effect on those children whose mothers had taken vitamin D during pregnancy.

    Also good for the muscles

Vitamin D also contributes to normal muscle function, and the researchers behind the British study were able to see that maternal vitamin D supplementation had a positive effect on the lean body mass of the children.

    Supplementation during the winter period

Our primary source of vitamin D is sunlight, which enables the synthesis of vitamin D in our skin. This is only possible during the summer when the sun sits sufficiently high in the sky to enable the process. During the fall, winter, and early spring, however, our skin does not synthesize the vitamin. In order to avoid becoming deficient, one can take a supplement like D-Pearls that contains biologically active vitamin D3 with documented absorption.

    A supplement with documented quality

Several studies have been conducted using D-Pearls and clearly show that the vitamin D in the supplement is absorbed well in the blood and works as expected. There are different strengths of D-Pearls, which makes it easy to find the dose that is suitable for personal needs. The small gelatin capsules are very easy to swallow. D-Pearls is also available in a 100 percent vegetarian/vegan version called D-Pearls Phyto with capsules made from peas, potatoes and non-GMO corn. This version is only available with 38 micrograms of vitamin D3 derived from algae.
